This Lent, one of our parish prayer practices is learning the beautiful chant Pater Noster together. The Church, especially through Vatican II, invites all Catholics to know how to pray the Our Father in this ancient way, alongside the settings we sing in our own language.

To help you learn, we are sharing a short teaching video from Fr. Robert Mehlhart, the Pope’s own cantor. This invitation is part of the Church’s desire to make the rich heritage of Gregorian chant accessible to all, and to encourage active and conscious participation in the liturgy. Bookmark the video on your phone and let it become part of your prayer during the week, or something you return to before coming to Mass.

The chant can feel a little challenging at first. Take it one phrase at a time. With a few repetitions, each line settles in, becomes familiar, then prayerful, and eventually something you carry with you.
